Wiener Mortalitätsmonitoring

Jedes Jahr sterben in Wien 16.000 bis 17.000 Menschen – also rund 45 Personen am Tag oder 300 in der Woche. Die wöchentlichen Todesfälle schwanken jedoch stark aufgrund saisonaler Ereignisse wie Grippe- oder Hitzewellen. Im Zuge der COVID-19-Pandemie ist der Bedarf an aktuellen Datenanalysen gestiegen. Die Landesstatistik Wien wertet daher wöchentlich die Sterblichkeit der Wiener Bevölkerung im laufenden Jahr in Hinblick auf ungewöhnliche Ereignisse aus.

In Austria, the first corona death occurred in mid-March 2020. Since then, there is a growing interest in the question as to whether the COVID-19 pandemic has led to increased overall mortality. For this reason, Statistics Vienna (MA 23) evaluates mortality trends in Austria’s nine provinces with regard to unusual events on a weekly basis applying the methodology developed for the Vienna Mortality Monitoring and on data provided by Statistics Austria.

In Vienna, approximately 16,000 to 17,000 people die each year. That corresponds to 45 deaths per day or 300 per week, on average. However, the actual weekly number of deaths fluctuates widely due to seasonal events such as flu epidemics or heat waves. The need for up-to-date data analysis has increased in the wake of the current COVID-19 pandemic. For this reason, Statistics Vienna evaluates the latest mortality trends and updates the available information week by week.
